Hello Everyone,
We have three children ds 13yrs, ds 11yrs, dd 7yrs and we've been home educating for nearly five years.
We are currently in West Yorkshire, but moving to Devon in February 2010 as my husband is starting a new job at Exeter University.
We are considering Totnes, Newton Abbot, and Torre at the moment and looking for somewhere to rent.
We'd love to hear what's happening home education wise in these areas (we'll be travelling about by public transport) and from home educators in those areas.
Thanks Sarah Thomas

Thanks for the replies. There'll be no driving as we all use public transport - we are quite used to and enjoy a bit of travelling. We're favouring Totnes as a place to live, so fingers crossed we find a house to rent there soon. Glad you're liking it in Devon Mirjam. I was told there's some kind of newsletter of HE activities, but I've sent a message to the email address I was given and haven't got a reply. I probably need to look around the online groups a bit more to find out whats going on, but rather busy selling our house and planning our move at present. We're moving down the first week of February and look forward to meeting other home educators then :)

hiya everyone, i joined this site recently after being recommended by hunnibunny, i have started to homeschool my 9 year old autistic son as the school he was in was making him and myself very unhappy, although he is autistic he isnt severe enough for the local special needs schools and i felt i could offer him a better education and more support than he was getting, since teaching mitchell myself he is much happier and having very few bad days which is fantastic, anyway i just wanted to introduce myself and mitchell to you all :)

Are there any Home ed groups or families that live or meet on Exmoor?
I live at the heart of Exmoor, and would love to meet with families on Exmoor. I can travel to Barnstable somtimes, though Exeter or Plymouth are simply too far.
Are there families who have children aged 10 upwards? My daughter has just turned 13. Her brother, now 17, was home schooled straight ino college and is now studying 4 a'levels. Although he is at college, he understands that he is still 'Homeschooled' and we still behave the same with him, as if he was at 'home' with us. All their decisions are filtered through the 'Home/family' Home edding has certainly worked for us.

Hi Carol We live in Tavistock, and our 5 & 7 year old children are our local primary school, but we often come into plymouth in search of more cultural diversity. We are really interested in home ed and would like to make an informed choice so would be interested to hear how you are getting on on your quest for more home ed info and finding local groups as Exeter is quite a trek. Best Wishes Jo

I realise that I am slightly out of your area and this may be a bit of a cheek, but your site is exactly what I am looking for and I wondered if you could please help me. Only two of my children now attend 'state' school and I am horrifed to learn how little they do compared to when my son in particular was home educated and I am now looking for a reputable tutor for GCSE HIstory and GCSE French in Exeter and wondered if anybody knows of one? Thank you

Yeh, it's lovely, the kids had a fantastic time and played for ages there. We had it all to ourselves for a while so that felt quiet special. They have done a wonderfull job with the hanging pine cones and the whole feel of the place is lovely.

I thought I would ask this question to help me, but also for others who are just about to take the leap into home educating! When you veterans first started, did you panic and think "what am I doing?" and what was your first lesson like with your child/children?

Hi there and welcome to H.G.K.
I think you will get a wide range of answers to this question as everyone that home educates seems to do it in their own individual way.
When I first started home edding I was wondering what I was going to do as my child got older and the education needed to step up a gear . I did worry at first but as soon as I met up with other home educating families I was fine.
I think all home educating families are prone to that moment of 'panic' when you suddenly wonder "what am I doing", it helps to have other home educators who you can talk to.
Its a good idea to go along to some local groups to get an idea of whats going on in your area. Your local E.O. contact would be able to help you further.
Hope this helps you with your thoughts, all the best Becky

I meant to do this last week... but a week is a long time in swimbridge. Wasn't this guy amazing? I so enjoyed the time I was able to spend in his company - how blessed we were to have a good story teller come to visit. - especially one in leather trousers.. I can't remember when I laughed so much (not at the trousers, they were seriously serious). A professional weaver of wonderful tales, a bard in the ancient magical sense, a trickster and an entertainer who brought some real life to our children's ears - I loved him. I hope he inspired the youngsters as much as he inspired me...

I have just stumbled on a home educating web ring / blog ring. This is all new to me , I don't read or write other peoples blogs but ive had a quick look at a few of the home ed blogs and some of them make quiet good reading. Anyway, this is the web page address where I started , http://www.ringsurf.com/ring_browser.php?id=985860 there is a box on each page , its background is green and it says -

this is what I used to go to the other blogs. Becky X

Hi everyone! I thought I did this earlier, but perhaps not ... if it pops up elsewhere don't be surprised. I was recently sent an article titled 'A Class Apart' by Rob Blackhurst that appeared in the FT last weekend - it makes interesting reading for us types, and you can check it out on the FT website.
