Rookie Life Saving

New Members for Swimming in September

For children 10yrs and over

If you would like to join the Rookie Lifesaving course which is ongoing at Ilfracombe swimming pool on Mondays 11-12 (just before Science)then come along in September.

2 swim instructors will be running the group so that the children who have completed bronze award already can continue with their silver award whilst the new members start at bronze.

Sorry, but at the moment he cannot have younger children in this group.

The children who already attend have really improved in their strength and stamina, and the lifesaving skills are an important life skill!!

Sessions in September

Begin on Monday 7th September for 10 weeks(not half term).

For those children who have completed Silver level 1, certificates will be there in September.

Email me to let me know if you are interested in joining and I will let Steve know numbers.

Welcome to Home Grown Kids. If you live in or around the Devon area and you home educate, flexi-school or are simply interested in home education, this is the site for you.

Included in our pages you will find a calendar of events .This is open to all home educators and lists most of the events and activities that are planned . The list is normally updated once or twice a week.

Home Grown Kids

Home Grown Kids started up in October 2006, it provides support for home educating families and home-educated children. The group meet on a weekly basis every Wednesday from 1:30pm 'til 4:30pm . These meetings allow parents to come together to chat, children to play and, if they wish, to be involved in slightly more formal educational activities. The group also arrange outings and events ranging from library skills workshops , jamming sessions, cultural days to bowling trips and activity days.
The group also endeavour to source professional tuition in languages and other disciplines where required on a group basis at an additional cost.
The group includes children of all ages and abilities, and has a zero bullying policy. We have 30+ families registered with the group.
Details of events etc. are communicated by e-mail, though contact by phone can be arranged where necessary.

Why home educate?

Home education is a legal choice under the 1996 Education act. Every parent is required to provide an effective education, whether in school or otherwise. However, effective does not necessarily mean the National Curriculum, nor a formal book based education. Most home educators are more interested in developing their children holistically, including their intellectual and social skills. Home educators vary considerably. Some use tutors or parent led tuition, often following formal courses of study or using workbooks linked to the National Curriculum. Some use an autonomous approach, following the children’s interests and simply answering questions and providing a rich learning environment. Most fall in the middle, doing the odd project or workbook, then letting the Summer flow with the children’s enthusiasm.

Does it work?

All the major research (funded by education authorities, so not unbiased!) has shown that children who are home educated are at least as skilled and knowledgeable as schooled children. Home educated children consistently outperform schooled children on formal school tests. Moreover, HE children develop skills communicating with adults, learn life skills, are more assertive and less likely to cave in to peer pressure than their schooled contemporaries.

What about exams?

HE children go on to all sorts of further and higher education. Children go on to college to do GCSE’s and vocational qualifications; put a portfolio of their work together for employers and universities and are accepted for degrees and courses; or go into the Open University or the Open College of the Arts. Some go on to 6th form to do A levels, without GCSE’s. There is now an exam centre in Exeter where home ed. children can take GCSEs and IGCSEs (no coursework required).

What about socialisation?

All children need other people to practice their social skills on and just for fun. Generally, social interactions at school are hurried and time limited, and often influenced by peer pressure and bullying. HE children are more likely to spend all day with a close friend, go camping or on sleepovers. They may not see their friends every day, but their time together is more satisfying. HE children are not restricted to their year group or own sex for friends.

What are the downsides?

One parent has to be at home to deliver the education! Many of our families are on a very low income as a result. Being with your children 24/7 can be wearing, especially if they are only children. Home education isn’t state funded: if you want to do chemistry you have to find the materials. The LEA (Local Education Authority) are required to ensure you are home educating effectively. You do not have to provide work, access to the children or even access to your home. Many parents provide a written report once a year and maybe meet with the LEA inspector once a year. Visits can be stressful.

How do I start?

First, find out more about HE in your area. Education Otherwise is a national charity that can give you local contacts as a starting point.
Next you need to write a letter to your child’s head teacher and let them know you would like your child withdrawn from the register as you intend to home educate them.
Then, join your local group.
Finally – come along to a range of events and socials and meet people. The best way to get involved is to help – join the committee, offer to help on a project or run a small workshop like meeting for a swim. Don’t be afraid to talk through any concerns you have – we have all been there!

A Midsummer Nights Dream

On Monday 30th October, I went to see A Midsummer Nights Dream by William Shakespeare at the Queens Theatre, Barnstaple. I went because I have never seen a Shakespeare play before. It was a very complicated plot but Shakespeare 4 Kidz Theatre Company transferred it to make A Midsummer Nights Dream it very easy for children to follow by combining modern day language and Shakespearean language.

The acting was brilliant. It was all very believable. My favourite character was Puck, I really believed that he was a mischievous elf because of his green outfit, elfish ears and bare feet. He had spiked hair sprinkled with green glitter. This gave him a more magical appearance. On the other hand I was not really sure who Oberon was due to the fact he was not introduced at the beginning of the play unlike the other characters.

I thought that the overall design of the show was very good. The costumes were excellent and they suited the personalities of the characters. In the forest scene the actors ran down the aisles with lanterns this made me really believe that they were in a spooky forest. The musical phrasing also added to the theatrical effect.

The audience was mostly school children and the atmosphere in the theatre was really brilliant. All of us joined in when we were supposed to by clapping in rhythm and chanting when necessary.

Overall I thought that it was an excellent way for me to be introduced to Shakespeare. And I would recommend anybody, of all ages, to go and see it. I would definitely go and see another performance by Shakespeare 4 Kidz.

The Aztec Empire by Adam, March 2006

The Aztecs had a large capital city, at the centre was a great temple. In this temple they done human sacrifice, they thought it made the gods happy. There was another temple for a snake god, they kept skulls there. Also in the city there were ball games and a court to play them in. They had a school, but only for rich kids.
The Aztecs lived close to nature, they thought animals were really important, they thought they had magical powers.
The Aztecs were great artists, they made lovely carvings out of stone. They recorded their history with pictures, we call these glyphs.
They lived in the village of Mexico and built a large wall around their capital city to protect it. In 1519 Spanish soldiers raided the city in search of gold. They destroyed the aqueducts, burnt the temples and killed the Aztec people. They stole the Aztec gold and riches.

The Maya tribes ruled over a large area. Highlands, lowlands, thick forests and scrublands in Mexico, Guatemala and surrounding areas. They were native hunter gatherers but also began to cultivate crops of beans and corn. They organised settlements and built villages. They were great astronomers and built temples and structures to worship the gods and study the stars. They made a calendar which can still accurately forecast both a solar and lunar eclipse, even today. They had 365 days, 18 months with 20 days and 5 extra days ( these were considered unlucky and it wasn't good if you were born on one ! )

Admission £2.50 per family. We welcome new families to our group and we organise trips and outings together as well as our weekly meeting. There is lots of outdoor space to run and play. Pottery is okay for all ages from two years old but it takes about four weeks to get your final glazed pot back as pots need two firings, but they are usually worth the wait! GCSE Spanish Contact Neil 01363 82314 We have a couple of teenagers who want to do a GCSE Spanish course over 2 years, if anyone else wants to do this in Exeter then they could share costs (ie £25 per session divided by number of students £25/3 = £8.33 etc. up to a max. of 6 students). DVHE Historical Visits Group, 1st Friday of the month. We visit places and events of historic interest: - National Trust and English Heritage but also re-enactments, prehistoric sites and other things members want to do. We meet in the 1st week of the month (usually Fridays but depends when properties are open. This is the only Dart Valley group that has a charge which is £2 per year per family to cover NT membership. There is a Yahoo group to aid communication, share links and photos, etc. DVHE Photography Group, 2nd Friday of the month. We support each other in our own projects, share photos online, meet at different venues to take photos and sometimes hire a hall to share our work. There are several experienced photographers in the group as well as complete beginners (children and adults). Please bring a camera (if you have one) and if you wish, photographs which you would like to share with everyone else. A group emphasising a practical, hands-on approach to taking and sharing photographs and exploring the full range of photography both traditional and digital. DVHE Natural History Group, 3rd Friday of the month Open group meets monthly for a Natural History ramble: a chance to learn to see and come to our own understanding of nature. Natural history can be a starting point to go in varied directions depending on your personal interests: i.e. science, photography, drawing and painting, herbalism, geography, geology, natural dyes or just the chance to be outdoors etc. Bring field guides, sketch/note pads, cameras, magnifiers, binoculars if you have them and your curiosity. We also have an active and friendly yahoo group to discuss future places to meet in the South and Central Devon area and share ideas and links about natural history, other local wildlife and nature events, informal meet ups, etc.. Meeting on one of the following themes: bats and moths, spiders, pond-dipping, birds, fossils, medicinal/edible herbs, wild flowers, natural dyes, wild food, badgers, fungi, seed collection, tree identification, signs of Spring, etc, as decided by the group. Family Swim at Totnes Pavilions Fridays, 1-4 pm We pay a school group price of £1:10 a head (under 5s free) and lots of the children have learnt to swim from these sessions by playing around in the pool together. Informal, fun and drop-in. Just turn up and tell reception you are here for the group swim. South Devon Home Education Group NB: For the first two weeks in February we are unable to meet at our usual venue as their panto is on. We will be meeting instead at Buckfastleigh Town Hall and Community Garden. You can park in the car park on Plymouth Road. This long established, popular and friendly group provides space and resources for play and creativity. Activities are always provided but with no pressure to join in. Children currently attending include babies up to teenagers. Our lovely, big, light hall has a kitchen, spacious playing fields outside and a play park. The grounds are enclosed and safe, where the children always have a lot of fun playing freely and imaginatively together. There are buses from Totnes and there are plenty of free parking spaces. We are democratically run and everyone is encouraged to help set up, bring along something to do, make suggestions, and help with clearing up. Drinks are provided at a small cost and tables are set up in the hall for eating packed lunches. We welcome new families and it's ok to come whenever it suits you. 4th and 11th February: Hearts and Flowers bring along card making things and create cards, then post your secret cards in a valentines postbox in preparation for Valentines Day. We will also be digging over and planting a bee and butterfly border to flower in the summer if the ground isn’t too frozen. You can also plant some seed in a pot to take home. Please bring wellies for outdoor use. 18th February at usual venue: Science Fair bring along an activity or demonstration to share with the group. 25th Literary Day: Come along dressed as a character from a favourite book and bring the book to share with your friends. We’ll also make books together. Follaton Group Contact Lindsay: lindsaybraga@ukgateway.net The Follaton Group meets fortnightly on Thursday afternoons during term-times at a hall in Totnes. It comprises a workshop (lead by families on a rota) followed by playtime. Adults and children participate in the workshops. Children's ages range from babies to 12 years. The group is regular (rather than drop-in) and is capped to keep workshop numbers manageable. The format of all working together followed by play has proved very successful, providing a stimulating and supportive environment. Acorns Contact Sharona on 07872832026 Here a group of home educated children spend two days a week during term times in workshop based projects in mixed age and ability group. There is a clear focus on literacy and numeracy with ample scope for exploration of other subjects, supported by qualified teachers with a creative, child-led approach to learning. There’s always time for cooking on the fire, looking after the animals, walking in the woods and playing games. We are based at Oakwood near Denbury, an example of low impact living informed by themes of climate challenge, sustainability and social responsibility. Mondays and Tuesday mornings are academic based workshops, Tuesday afternoons have an emphasis on the themes outlined above, combined with practical arts and crafts supported by various local organisations/ workshop facilitators. The hall is on Bossell Road close to Buckfastleigh Town Centre and handy for parking. 21st February: Hazel Chairs and Benches from 11 am Come along to build outdoor benches and chairs from hazel. This workshop involves tools and is most suitable for adults and teenagers, though a play area will be provided for younger children. Workshop is FREE if you are helping us to create things for the garden. If you’d like to make your own chair to take home then please pay £15 per item. Soundart Radio 102.5fm www.soundartradio.org.uk contact office@soundartradio.org.uk We’re an art radio station for south Devon, for people to experiment and play with radio, try out new ideas, perform, discuss, think and listen. Several home educating families are already involved with the station. We run workshops and training in creative radio skills and value everyone’s contribution. Membership Membership of the station is open to all. Members receive training and support to make their own radio shows or come in as guests, receive regular newsletters and invites to socials and special events and can borrow portable recording equipment. We are offering family membership at a special rate of £8 a year (normally £20) to Home Educating families. Email us and say you saw it in this newsletter. The Jamming Session.

Mainly done by Arthur and Charlie, one plays the drums the other plays the guitar.
They both make good music to dance to and to listen to.
(If Charlie dosn't forget to bring his foot pedal that is !)

Puddings & Craft Fair

Today at the group we had quiet a few different things going on. It was a lovely day , it was busy,noisy,interesting and most of all fun.The hall was filled with beautiful smells of oranges and spices.

To start the afternoon the older boys had a jamming session and later on some enjoyed a game of War Hammer.

We had card making with Rachel and Christmas pudding making with Debbie and Gaynor. (see below for recipe)

The pudding making was a huge hit with the kids, especially the bit where they got to mix the ingredients in big bowls !

The craft fair was also a huge hit, this time with the adults !

The home made crafts and produce looked fantastic and quiet a few bits and bobs were snapped up by enthusiastic Christmas present hunters ! I managed to get some very pretty presents there myself and also treated myself to one of Nikki's organic lemon cakes - mmmmmm :)

Jo's jewelery table had great appeal, everything looked beautiful and very trendy. It was definitely an eye catcher and the girls really loved it.

We also had a H.G.K. bring and buy table which was brimming with stuff for sale. There were beautiful girls clothes, trendy boys clothes, dressing up clothes, household items and toys. Im not sure how much we raised for the H.G.K. fund but by the end of the day there wasn't that much left.

You will probably not find this receipe in any cookery book. It was given to my mum by a farmer’s wife and had been handed down, in her family, over several generations. We think it is the best Christmas pudding receipe ever created! Ingredients – Will make 6, 1lb puddings 225g plain flour
450g breadcrumbs
1 tsp salt
2 tsp mixed spice
Juice and rind 1 orange
Juice and rind 1 lemon
675g suet
450g dark brown sugar
450g currants
450g cherries
50g chopped/ground almonds
450g raisins
450g sultanas
100g mixed peel
675g cooking apples (chopped)
1 carrot grated
8 eggs
1 can stout

Soak all fruit in the stout for 24 hours.
Mix in all the remaining ingredients
Stir well
Leave overnight Steam the next day for 9 hours. After covering in
Grease proof paper and tinfoil.
After steaming take off greaseproof paper and allow to dry for 12 hours (keep in pudding basin)
Recover with clean greaseproof paper and cover the whole basin in tinfoil.
Before eating; steam for 1 hour per 1lb pudding.
If you wish to give the pudding away as a gift cut a square of calico with pinking shears, tie with parcel string, attach a suitable tag and some curly tinsel. A luggage label can also be attached with the steaming instructions and ingredients if desired.
