Exeter College: Admission for home educated post 16 students. On the 7th May three members from Free Range Learning, a home education support group based in Exeter, met with Exeter College staff, Anne Oxborough, Assistant Principal and Rachel Iles, Student Experience (who also deals with admissions), to discuss the admission requirements for home educated post 16 students. We had requested the meeting as home educated students are finding it difficult to meet the admissions criteria. Lately, the college had further tightened its admissions policies in effect making it very difficult for home educated teenagers who have not previously taken GCSE’s to access their programmes at certain levels. We were able to explain the difficulties home educators face in accessing GCSE’s prior to age 16, for instance, problems with finding exam centres willing to take private candidates, marking of coursework and the high costs involved. We explained that although the students are applying to the college without the required GCSE’s this did not reflect on their ability or motivation to succeed. We discussed various ways the problem could be overcome with the following result. In future applications from home educated students will be separated on receipt and given separate consideration. For level 2 courses (normally requiring a minimum of 4 GCSE’s at grade D or above) the College will arrange for the student to have an extended interview, with a dedicated member of staff aware of home education issues, from the relevant department, to allow time for the young person to explain their interest in the course and present alternative evidence of interest and ability, such as a portfolio or relevant work experience etc. The college may also request a personal statement written by the young person. A decision as to the application will be based on the interview and evidence provided. They have agreed that home educated post-16 teenagers will be able to access the Target GCSE programme (this is for students who just missed C grades) without having previously taken GSCE’s (again this will be subject to satisfactory interview). The option of using the Fast Track will remain, but as this is a foundation GCSE programme, primarily for children who failed to engage at school, its relevance to home educated teenagers is less likely. This meeting did not formulate a policy for Level 3 (AS/A2, etc) qualification applications; however, through our discussions, such applications were not precluded and, with the openness of the college to the possibility, there should no longer be the struggle there has been in the past. It will be up to individuals to provide evidence that they are capable of study at the required level in order to be considered for these courses. Obviously students will be able to progress to level 3 courses on successful completion of a level 2 course. Both Anne Oxborough and Rachel Iles wanted to ensure that all home educated applicants have their applications processed by the new procedure and have said that they will monitor the process. All staff in the admissions department are to be made aware of the policy. We felt this was a very productive meeting and were pleased to find the senior management were very amenable to accommodating our concerns and helping to formulate an admissions policy that allows home educated teenagers, who do not have the necessary qualifications, to access the college in as uncomplicated a way as possible.

Our lovely big light hall has a kitchen, spacious playing fields outside and a play park. The grounds are enclosed and safe, where the children always have a lot of fun playing freely and imaginatively together. There are buses from Totnes and there are plenty of free parking spaces. Everyone is encouraged to help set up, bring along something to do, make suggestions, and help with clearing up. Drinks are provided at a small cost and tables are set up in the hall for eating packed lunches. We welcome new families and it's ok to come whenever it suits you. The group has membership of SPARC, the Dartington Scrapstore, which can provide wonderful resources for families. Meetings continue through half terms & holidays.

The Follaton Group meets fortnightly on Thursday afternoons during term-times at a hall in Totnes. It comprises a workshop (lead by families on a rota) followed by playtime. Adults and children participate in the workshops. Children's ages range from babies to 11 years. The group is regular (rather than drop-in) and is capped to keep workshop numbers manageable. The format of all working together followed by play has proved very successful, providing a stimulating and supportive environment.

We also have an active and friendly yahoo group to discuss future places to meet in the South and Central Devon area and share ideas and links about natural history, other local wildlife and nature events, informal meet ups, etc.. DVHE Future Events Also, Gordon is planning to organise a bushcraft skills series of workshops starting with fire, fire safety and how to start a fire without harming the environment. Contact as above We held a bicycle maintenance/repair session before Christmas which was really useful and we'll do another series soon. If anyone is interested let us know. Also planned are trip behind the scenes at local theatre and TV studios. Other ideas for one-off events are in the pipeline, including clowning and balloon sculpture workshop, drama work with actors, and developing skills making scenery, a ceilidh workshop with a children's ceilidh band, African dance/drumming, dyeing/wild food. Any other ideas for one-offs, new regular groups or activities welcome. We are organising a Natural History camp soon.

Acorns
Contact Sharona on 07872832026 Acorns is a new group based at Oakwood, a working example of low impact living near Denbury. Here a group of home educated children spend two days a week during term times in workshop based projects. The capable, fully qualified and experienced tutors have chosen to work with a mixed age (8-11) and ability group. There is a clear focus on literacy and numeracy with ample scope for exploration of other subjects. The narrative evolving at Oakwood is informed by themes of low-impact living, climate challenge, sustainability and social responsibility. Mondays and Tuesday mornings are academic based workshops. Tuesday afternoons have an emphasis on the themes outlined above, combined with practical arts and crafts, often beginning with a presentation, demonstration or a walk in the woods, with work supported by various local organisations/ workshop facilitators.
.
Saplings We are currently seeking funding to provide a similar group for young people aged over 11 as an alternative to mainstream secondary school. Starting from September this year we hope to provide a second classroom to facilitate 2 workshops a week, also on Mondays and Tuesdays with a broadly scientific focus. These will help children prepare for GCSEs and learn valuable life skills. We would like to hear soon from families who may be interested in this possibility.
.
Summer Science Workshops At Acorns, during July and August, a series of fun and practical outdoor workshops open to all children aged 8-12 years. Families are welcome to book for individual workshops or for the whole course. This project will inspire children’s innate curiosity for the natural world and present opportunities for them to engage with nature in many different ways, including art, science experiments, drama, cookery, games, story-telling etc. We will cover many aspects of the national curriculum, helping to address needs of children who may be considering entering mainstream education in the future. Workshops will take place on Thursdays or Fridays (dates t.b.c.) from 9.30-3.30 with a focus on science in the mornings and games in the afternoon. Cost: £15 per workshop per child.
